Heavenly Father, we thank you for the beginning of this assembly. Lord, as we start this morning, we are reminded that one of the members, Representative Barnett, is not with us today. He's ill. Lord, we pray that your healing will be on him, and we pray your presence for he and his family as he recovers.
And Lord, we pray that you'll give him healing and bring him back here to this assembly to serve in this place. Lord, as we begin today, we thank you for the members, and we thank you for their willingness to serve. Lord, today we ask your guidance and your blessings on them as we begin this legislative session. Lord, we ask for your blessings on their families, many of whom are in attendance today. Lord, we thank you for the families and their support for each of the members. And we thank you for the time and the energy that they have given in being here today.
And they will give as they support the members of the house. Lord, I pray that you will bless them. Lord, we ask your blessings on the governor and his family. And we pray for wise wisdom and leadership as he guides us. We pray for the speaker. Lord, we pray that you will give him wisdom as he guides and leads in this process. And Lord, as we go through the ceremonies today, we pray that all of the things that we do and that we see will be a reminder to those who are serving of the honor and the blessing that they have of serving and the responsibility that they have in representing those who have sent them here today.
Lord, we pray your blessings on the beginning of this session. We pray your blessings and your guidance and your leadership for those who are serving today. Lord, we thank you that we can come and we can pray. Lord, we thank You that we pray to a Father who answers prayer. And we thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus. In His name we pray. Amen. Amen. Color Guard, proceed.

Speaker 81
1:03:45
you. Thank you. Thank you all. Thank you. I'm
Speaker 83
1:03:54
extremely honored to be standing here today alongside all of my esteemed colleagues. Together, we
Speaker 82
1:04:03
are a strong house of 100 members comprised of Arkansans from every hollow of this beautiful state.
100 Arkansans who have answered the call of public service to represent our districts work on behalf of some 3 million people and serve as an example of good government. An example that transcends politics and hopefully extends beyond the borders of our state. I would not be standing here today if not for the
Speaker 83
1:04:36
support of my family. My parents are here to my right.
The older I get, the more I appreciate how I was raised. A loving, hardworking, and God-fearing family My parents spent time with me You know, I say it's not that hard You know, you spend time with your kids Life's not that hard, right? I mean, I bet you've thrown 10,000 balls to me And I don't think I ever dropped one, by the way So that's pretty remarkable catches in the hallway I was pretty good in the hall
But I'm forever grateful I didn't have to look beyond my own doorstep to find role models. When Kara and I moved from Mariana to Cabot some nine years ago, it was very tough on the family, and it was tough for Kara and I. Mariana was home, and as Representative Murdoch would tell you, there's some really good people for Mariana. But literally within an hour of driving in the cab at the search of a job so many years ago,
I was blessed to meet Mr. Tracy French. And Tracy, I want you to know I've learned more from you. I appreciate you more than you'll ever, ever, ever, ever, ever know. It was God's sin that I pulled off that exit that day. and off that same exit I met some great friends and I value their friendship very much I have other family and friends here today in front and in the gallery that are very special
I want to thank you all for coming and being here of course I'd like to make special recognition of my wife, Kara and my three children Jackson, John David, and Anna
Speaker 86
1:06:31
Claire and I'm pretty sure Jackson is upset with me I just gave him a PDA right in front of all these people if you don't know what a pda is that's a public you know display of affection right that's what i yeah yeah yeah you know the truth
Speaker 83
1:06:46
is they're the ones who sacrificed when i was sitting in law school at night and i wasn't at home or out of state working and not at
home or being a member of this house and not at home it was the though it was it was you guys that sacrificed. And equally, I know all of your families have sacrificed as well. Members, I want to take a minute to recognize our families, because
Speaker 82
1:07:12
they are asked to make tremendous sacrifices in order for us to serve. They are called on to step up and step in when our attention must be directed towards the work of this chamber and towards the work
of this state. So I want to thank you all for your sacrifices. Indeed, the 89th General Assembly has already made history. But today forward, history will be made because of what we do, not who we are.
We have a serious mission in front of us. We are charged with addressing the needs and concerns of all Arkansans, and we just took an oath to do so. I'm confident that we can answer that call with our diverse professional and personal backgrounds, from teachers to lawyers to small business owners to doctors who hail from the banks of the Mississippi
Speaker 83
1:08:21
to the highlands of the Ozarks. Ozarks, our experiences and backgrounds come together in Little Rock for the greater good
Speaker 82
1:08:30
of our state. We all have the benefit of example. We now sit in seats occupied by members
Speaker 83
1:08:40
who have made great strides to improve the quality of life for our Kansans. When I look back at the history of this chamber and hear stories of examples of members working together to do the people's work,
Speaker 82
1:08:54
I'd like to point to the example of the late Representative Jody Mahoney and Representative Preston Bynum. It is important to note that when Preston served,
he was the only Republican in this House. Now, we all know that margins have changed, and that's not the political landscape of the day. But Preston and Jody worked together, side by side to enact effective education policy. They weren't acting as a member of their respective parties. They weren't acting members of their respective gender nor economic status. They acted on behalf of their constituents
Speaker 83
1:09:35
and on behalf of the citizens of this
Speaker 82
1:09:40
state. And that's exactly what the members of the 89th General Assembly will do. Now this won't be a cakewalk We have serious issues ahead
Speaker 83
1:09:51
That will require vigorous debate But that's okay That's what we're charged to do Never forget Every time you push that button You're pushing that button
For 30,000 Arkansans And every time we enact a law We're affecting the lives of 3 million people. This is serious business. In closing, our responsibility
Speaker 82
1:10:17
is now a reality for which we will all be held accountable. In the coming days and weeks that lie ahead, we will be faced with a lot of hard work and tough decisions. We will not always agree on the issues of the day,
Speaker 83
1:10:37
but we are all here because we are very proud to serve this great state. So I wish each of you a great experience in the 89th General Assembly. I'm very proud of each of you for this historic day for you. Thank you. God bless. Thank you.
Speaker 82
